Our Mission

West Coast Martial Arts Academy strives to create a positive learning experience for all ages. We started our martial arts school on the border of Rancho Bernardo in the 4S Ranch business park in 2007. Since then, our martial arts school has always been growing.  Although we teach some traditional martial arts like Karate, we are not afraid to adapt to change. Still, we will never compromise our integrity or quality. For that reason, we inspire all West Coast Martial Arts Academy students to strive to be their best!

With that in mind, we are committed to providing a safe and friendly martial arts training environment. Most importantly, we want a place where all ages and all levels can experience the life changing benefits of Martial Arts. It doesn’t matter if your kids are 4 years old or if you’ve lived in 4S Ranch since the beginning and want to train, we feel like martial arts can help you!

Experience

West Coast Martial Arts Academy’s instructors have years of training experience and all grew up in 4S Ranch or Rancho Bernardo. We don’t just throw anyone on the mat to teach. We have an instructor training course to create leaders on and off the mat. Because of this, they are well-equipped to teach students in private and group classes.
Our martial arts school in 4S Ranch is superior to any other facility. Our facility is 5,000 square feet. Furthermore, our training mats are the best that money can buy. Because of this, you will never feel cramped or stuck when practicing in class.

Our Roots

Have you ever heard of Kajukenbo?  It was America’s first mixed martial art.  Kajukenbo combines several fighting arts.  First, our main striking arts are karate, kenpo, and boxing.  Second, for throws, we have Judo and Chin Na.  Lastly, we teach standing Jiu-Jitsu for control techniques. Unlike learning martial arts in 4S Ranch today kajukenbo was practiced by ex-military, police officers, and people who wanted to make sure their self defense movers worked in real life.  It all started on the main island in Hawaii.  Adriano Emperado founded it in 1947. Today, it has become one of the most popular forms of self-defense practiced in the world today.

The art of Kajukenbo is constantly evolving.  We have incorporated techniques from Erik Paulson’s Combat Submission Wrestling and STX program.  In short, we continue to evolve our fighting system.  That’s what makes our 4S Ranch martial arts program the best!

Our Goal

West Coast Martial Arts Academy is dedicated to helping anyone grow and improve through the martial arts.  We feel anyone can become their best self and martial arts can be the vehicle for that growth.

Currently West Coast Martial Arts Academy offers programs in which students can earn separate black belts levels in :

  • Kempo-Jiu Jitsu ” Kajukenbo”
  • Fu Jow Pai Tiger Claw Kung Fu,
  • Hung gar and Mi Jhong I
  • Tai Chi Chi Gong
  • Catch Wrestling and STX Kickboxing

(It should be noted the 4S Ranch & Rancho Bernardo locations teach kung-fu styles exclusively in private lessons and have limited availability.)

Our self defense programs teaching philosophy is as follows:

  1. It must work against someone bigger than me.
  2. It must work against multiple attackers.
  3.  It must give me the reflexes and skills that improves my ability to survive an ambush attack.

Frequently Asked Questions

Since martial arts schools have been around most of them were called karate schools even if some taught tae kwon do, or jujitsu or muay thai.  In this age of mixed martial arts we just say karate the same way someone says kleenex even though kleenex is a brand and they are actually tissues.

Although any sport or activity has some risk involved, our team of certified instructors(All of whom trained martial arts with us in 4S Ranch) follow safety protocols to ensure a safe and supportive environment for our students. In fact, unlike sports which have one adult supervising an entire team, we have multiple instructors monitoring a room at all times making sure everything runs smoothly. We understand that each student has their own unique limits and we encourage rest and feedback during exercise.

Martial Arts is usually advertised as violent but that is a myth. Our 4S Ranch school teaches martial arts to create harmony and tranquility in our lives. The majority of training focuses around movement and energy. Our Karate Kids learn to talk through confrontations and find an adult when they need support. However, if violence threatens your child’s life, they now have the tools to fend off the attack and safely escape the situation.

We give you everything you need to try out our classes.  When you enroll you will receive a uniform and a t-shirt.  We do have safety gear for sparring that will need to be purchased eventually but we have plenty for new students to borrow in the beginning.

When our kids leave RB and 4S for college, we want to know they have certain skills they are taking with them.  In addition to training children in neutralizing conflict and self defense, martial arts also instills essential life skills like focus, discipline, confidence, and respect. Kids learn to be goal oriented instead of focusing on immediate gratification.
